DIRTY: HI, BEAUTIFUL.
JUSTINO ESTEVEZ: Hi Dirty!
D: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
JE: I was born in Fecamp, Normandy in 1983.
D: WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
JE: I grew up in France where I've lived for 18 years...
D: DID YOU STUDY ART / DESIGN? WHERE?
JE: I didn't have the chance to study art, no. I was that student brilliant in art at school and really bad at other courses. It's with art that I got my first degree. I couldn't afford to pursue my art education any further because I had to go to work. So I did.
D: WHEN DID YOU START TAKING PHOTOS?
JE: I started when I was a kid, I actually organized photo shoots with my friends, covered the wall with news papers or with a duvet. I remember to save my money, I used to go to the snap station a lot to print them and buy film (which cost a lot at that time).
D: WHEN DID PHOTOGRAPHY BECOME A SERIOUS THING FOR YOU?
JE It started to be serious when I arrived to London 5 years ago, I met a fashion photographer and assisted him... as soon as I went to the first shoot, I knew that it was my thing.
D: WHEN YOU MOVED TO LONDON, WHO DID YOU ASSIST?
JE: Fabrice Lachant and Thomas Giddings. The first teated me retouching and creativity. The second natural fashion. They are both great and I'm still a fan of both their work.
D: WHICH WAS YOUR FIRST TATTOO? HOW OLD WHERE YOU?
JE: My first tattoo was one of two aliens on my back from one of my favorite games.
D: WHAT GAME IS THAT?
JE: Alien Homonid. It's a 2-d shooting game, for Gameboy. It was colorful and funny — have a look, you'll love it!
D: ARE YOU PLANNING ON GETTING ANY MORE TATS?
JE: I think I want to cover my arms, hands and my neck… and my legs. Yeah, a lot actually.
D: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT TO SHOOT?
JE: My trips, and my life style. I love to keep my camera with me and get whatever I think is hot or inspiring.
D: WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU SHOOT WITH?
JE: I use a Canon 30d to travel, and 5d Mark II to work.
D: WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SHOOTS THAT YOU WORKED ON?
JE: All of them. It always give me this exciting feeling - the challenge of 'how am I going to produce what I have in my mind with what I have in my hands?'
D: DO YOU LIKE HAVING YOUR PICTURE TAKEN? YOU LIKE THE ATTENTION?
JE: I used to like it. Now, I kind of say, "OK, lets do it…" The attention was a way to show how I look, put a face on my name. And of course I like the attention… we all like some attention!
D: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM?
JE: The Fifth Element is my favorite. But Lilo and Stitch is actually the best mix of innocence and happiness that I'm always looking for.
D: WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
JE: I'm working on a series of photos for an exhibition called MICKYLAND, opening the 18th of September here in Paris at Galerie Art Present. Also thinking of doing a comic, a piece of art with a bit of fun. Colorful and incorporating photography.
D: BESIDES PHOTOGRAPHY, DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER CREATIVE HOBBIES?
JE: Aside from photography, I draw... may be a good idea to show them in the future… (laughs) ;-)
D: TELL ME A SECRET.
JE: Im scared of the dark.
