RECYCLED MILITARY GEAR BY RALPH LAUREN’S NEPHEW GREG

In honor of Veterans Day , designer Greg Lauren, nephew of Ralph, has created 30 one-of-a-kind pieces made of vintage military uniforms, including bags and tents. Starting Friday to Nov. 18, the one of a kind collection will be sold at an installation titled “Barracks” at 125-127 Grand Street; (917) 514-8583.

HEDI SLIMANE: CALIFORNIA SONG

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles presents Hedi Slimane‘s California Song. The collection of work centers around the photographer’s ‘California period’ in which he explored urban youth culture and artistic communities. Slimane’s first West Coast show is divided into two parts: a series of black-and-white print photographs on the ground floor and a motion-photography installation, created specifically for the MOCA, on the second floor. The show runs from November 12 – January 22 at the MOCA Pacific Design Center.

SPINELLO PROJECTS: SITE SPECIFIC NO.1

Curator and Dirty editor-at-large Anthony Spinello returns to Miami with a triple set of solo shows, within the walls of a discarded schoolhouse space, which once housed a Christian family and social services center. Spinello’s first site-specific project features the work of Agustina Woodgate, Santiago Rubino, and Typoe.

GIANT LEGO WASHES UP ON FLORIDA COAST

An 8-foot tall Lego man washes up over night on Siesta Key Beach, FL. The lego weighed 100 lbs with the words ‘No Real Than You Are’ written across his chest. LEGOLAND officials told Sarasota Herald Tribune the piece was not endorsed by the company.

 

 

WHAT’S UP ON YOUR NYC BLOCK?

MyBlockNYC.com is an interactive online mapping project that stitches together a holistic portrait of life in the city through a series of intimate video accounts. Participants capture moments, places, and stories that are meaningful to them—on smartphones, digital cameras, or, in the case of a pilot program in a group of New York City public schools, donated flipcams—and then upload the clips to the project website, where they are coded according to geographical location and integrated into a map of the city. KEI KAGAMI – 10 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE

A ’10 Year Retrospective of Shoemaker Kei Kagami’ is set to be exhibited at Steinbeisser Gallery, Amsterdam starting November 5. Japanese architect turned designer gave up building to attend Central Saint Martins, gaining critical acclaim in 2005 at Milan Fashion Week. Since then, he’s created an amazing body of work appreciated on the runway and the gallery.

ANDY ROONEY DIES AT AGE 92

Cantankerous CBS commentarian Andy Rooney died on Friday at age 92, following surgical complications.  The famed curmudgeon delivered his signature rant at the closing of “60 Minutes” every sunday from 1978 up until his final appearance on October 2, 2011.

SIGN LANGUAGE

Galerie Wagner + Partner will be exhibiting photo artist Josef Schulz, alongside one of the most highly praised abstract German artists George Karl Pfahler, with series SIGN OUT (2009). Schulz reimagines the typical large American billboard sign and strips away all typography, reducing it to its core shapes and colors. ‘Signs’ will run through January 12, 2012 in Berlin.
