PIETER HUGO DISPELS THE MYTH OF THE TRAVELING BANK ROBBERS

Pieter Hugo, one of South Africa’s most renown photographers has made a career of capturing the disenfranchised people of the continent. His most talked about series “The Hyena and Other Men” (2005-2007) depicts nomadic minstrels in Nigeria who perform with hyenas and other wild animals. Initially termed bank robbers, drug dealers, and debt collectors by a South African newspaper, Hugo was insistent on unraveling the myth behind these figures. He met the group on the outskirts of Abuja and followed them to Kanu. Hugo discovered that the group were actually trained performers who went from town to town, entertaining hordes of people and selling medicine. Hugo forged a relationship with the group that lasted over two years. The result is a stunning series of images portraying the relationship between trainer and animal — tender, conflicting, and sometimes violent.
