KATIE GALLAGHER: SEXY STITCHES

kg1

FASHION DESIGNER KATIE GALLAGHER IS QUICKLY BECOMING KNOWN FOR HER SEEMINGLY SCI-FI, YET ALWAYS ETHERAL DESIGNS, SHOWCASING EXQUISITELY COMPLICATED PATTERN MAKING AND AN AMAZING ABILITY TO SELF EDIT.
During New York’s AW2010 fashion week, the Rhode Island School of Design graduate introduced her second collection at the Soho Grand Hotel: The collection, dubbed The Heart of the Woods and What I Found There, artfully combines varying opacities and textures in monochromatic palettes. Each of the twenty looks mix elaborately constructed pants, leggings, dresses & jackets. The end result: expertly styled, modern fem-bot ensembles.
Her new work has been receiving accolades – but that isn’t news to Katie. One of her very first RISD projects was a dress made of metal springs (Katie formed the springs herself by hand) that ended up getting pulled for both Lady Gaga and Daphne Guiness. She, along with boyfriend & fellow RISD graduate, designer Nikolay Saveliev, was featured in Interview before even graduating. Despite the whirlwind of attention and interest in Katie Gallagher however, the beautiful, soft spoken and (dare I say) mysterious designer is still a very grounded and down to earth person who seems simply to be doing what she loves.

DIRTY: WERE YOU A CREATIVE CHILD? WHO WAS YOUR MAIN CREATIVE INSPIRATION GROWING UP?

KATIE GALLAGHER: Of course. I liked my grandparents on my moms side a lot (still do). My Grandma(Bear) and I would take really long walks together all the time through golf courses etc. and my grandpa was a “painter.” (He liked to watch Bob Ross and would paint things like deer and mountains). I used to make little drawings that I kept in a plastic crate. When he would come over to the house, I would grab some sketches from the crate and show him and ask them if they were good yet. Haha.

D: YOU GRADUATED FROM RISD. WHAT DID YOU MAJOR IN?

D: WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR AUTUMN/WINTER 2010 COLLECTION?

KG: Basically my illustrations, drawings and paintings. I work though a big series of sketches for each piece I want to create. I try to recreate what I draw three-dimensionally which calls for some pretty obscure pattern making. I painted a wintry, pastel landscape to help me develop the color palette that I was imaging for the season.

D: YOUR CLOTHES HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS FEM-BOT & FUTURISTIC, SCI-FI & FEMININE. DOES THIS IDEA OF FANTASY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR DESIGNS?

KG: Not really… I just work with some non-traditional patternmaking in mind, but I usually make things that fit a bit better around the body.

D: YOU HAVE SUCH AN AMAZING ATTENTION TO DETAIL – ARE YOU LIKE THAT WITH EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO?

KG: Yes. Actually pretty anal about everything and very particular especially when it comes to my own work.

D: HOW DID YOUR PERSONAL STYLE EVOLVE TO YOUR CURRENT LOOK?

KG: I basically wear what I like and try to design what I would like to wear myself. Ive maintained a similar style/look probably since I was about 14… it just gets a little more refined as I get older.

D: WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE WEARING YOUR CLOTHES?

KG: Everyone!

D: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NEW YORK? HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?

KG: I just graduated from RISD in May 2009. I moved here officially the day after which was May 31st 2009. I have been here off and on throughout college though, working during the summers and I was living here for 2 months of so during the winter of my senior year. I like it fine here. Its good for work, not sure what else its very good for other than food and some bars.

D: ARE YOU MORE OF A DAY OR NIGHT PERSON?

KG: Both. But I love the mornings more. My favorite meal is breakfast and I love running in the mornings.

D: BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME?

KG: Halloween Soundtracks.
D: WHO / WHAT INSPIRES YOU CREATIVELY? DO YOU DO ANY OTHER CREATIVE WORK, APART FROM YOUR CAREER IN FASHION?

KG: I draw and paint as well. I wish I had more time to just sit down and draw like I used to do (things other than fashion sketches) but there is very little time for that with all this fashion stuff I’m wrapped up in. I do hope for a change someday.

D: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE VISUAL ARTIST?

KG: I generally follow images, not people. I really like Peter Doigs paintings at the moment.

D: WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE FILMS EVER?

KG: David Lean’s Dr. Zhivago. (and Hocus Pocus).
