BEN BRAUN & IAN MACKINTOSH HAVE BEEN MAKING MUSICAL MAGIC TOGETHER SINCE THE MOMENT THEY MET, WHICH RESULTED IN THEIR DEBUT ALBUM THE SOUND. AS THEIR SECOND ALBUM NEARS WORLDWIDE RELEASE (AVAILABLE ON ITUNES 9/21), MACKINTOSH BRAUN TAKES TIME TO TALK WITH US ABOUT THEIR SOUND, AS WELL AS THEIR ONGOING COMPETITION AMONGST EACH OTHER TO HAVE THE LARGEST HAIR.

DIRTY: WHERE ARE YOU GUYS FROM ORIGINALLY?

BEN BRAUN: I was born in New York and grew up in Park Slope in Brooklyn and Montclair, NJ before moving to Portland at the age of 9.
Ian was born in Los Angeles, CA and grew up in Santa Barbara, and moved to southern Oregon as a teenager.

D: WHEN DID THE BAND FORM?  HOW DID YOU GUYS FIRST MEET?

BB: The band formed back in 2007 when I heard some music Ian was working on at the time, and I was blown away. I got in touch with him online somehow and we set up a meeting to talk music, since I was doing some production work as well. From the first meeting, things seemed to just click, and we began writing together pretty much instantly. After he and his housemates had to move, he set up shop in my studio apartment and that’s where we wrote our first album “The Sound.”

D: WHAT IS YOUR NEW ALBUM “WHERE WE ARE” ABOUT FOR YOU GUYS?

BB: For us this record was about making songs that people can move to, we want them to go to our show and dance their socks off. Then on the other hand, we wanted you to be able to throw the album in your iPod and take it on a long drive. We wanted this record to sound like albums did 25 years ago, bring back some nostalgia I guess.

D: DID YOU GUYS COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE ON THIS RECORD?

BB: Not really in terms of songwriting or production. Ian and I seem to write best when we lock ourselves in the studio, void of outside influence. We wrote all the songs on this album together, and produced it all ourselves as well at our home studio, 17th & Cleet Studios (it’s in Ian’s apartment). We mixed the tracks as well at a great studio in Portland called Klickitat Band Camp.

D: WHICH SONG FROM THE ALBUM REALLY RESONATES WITH YOU?

BB: Right now I love “familiar.” I just think it’s an all around great track, has so many of the elements I love in a song.

D:WHAT INSPIRES THE MACKINTOSH BRAUN SOUND?

BB: Many things, I think. Definitely our love of music and what we want it to sound like. Hearing other great bands and songs right now is truly inspiring and only drives us more. It’s great to see this resurgence in good pop music, feels nice to be a part of.

D: MACKINTOSH & BRAUN ARE YOUR LAST NAMES – ARE THERE ANY OTHER BAND
MEMBERS?

Not in terms of the songwriting/production end. But live, we do play with my dad, Mike. He was the long time drummer for Hall & Oates and he kicks major ass up there behind the skins. We plan on adding a fourth member on stage soon that will OWN the keys!

D:DREAM GIG?

BB: We’d love to play with bands like Daft Punk or The Cure. But really there are so many great bands out there, I say, why pick one?

D: WHO / WHAT INSPIRES YOU GUYS CREATIVELY?

BB: For me, I loved Led Zeppelin growing up. Then I got into bands like The Cure, Steely Dan, and Prince as I got a little older. Now there are so many great bands out there, recently I can’t stop listening to this song “Chinatown” by Wild Nothing. Pure genius.

D:HAVE / WILL YOU GUYS TOUR WITH THE ALBUM?

BB: Yeah! Shows coming soon…

D: WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR MACKINTOSH BRAUN?

BB: We’re excited about the new album out September 21st and can’t wait to play all these new songs for everyone. It’s gonna be fun!

D: WHERE DO YOU GUYS SEE YOURSELVES IN 5 YEARS?

BB: We see ourselves making music, touring all over the world, and enjoying life.

D: DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY OTHER CREATIVE OUTLETS, ASIDE FROM MUSIC?

BB: I do strive to be a Segway instructor, but I can’t seem to find one to train myself on. Soon…

D: IF YOU HAD TO SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR ENTIRE MUSIC COLLECTION, WITH THE
EXCEPTION OF 10 SONGS, THEY WOULD BE:

Man this is tough!! How bout 5? 10 seems daunting:

The Cure – “Just Like Heaven”
Radiohead – “Idioteque”
Led Zeppelin – “Hey Hey What Can I Do?”
Pinback – “Penelope”
Royksopp – “Happy Up Here”

D:TELL DIRTY SOMETHING ABOUT THE BAND NO ONE KNOWS.

BB: We compete with each other for who can have the biggest hair. I’m winning as of late.

D: YOU GUYS SHOULD LET DIRTY HOOK YOU UP WITH AN ARTIST FOR YOUR NEXT ALBUM
COVER!

BB: (Silence)
