HAILING FROM CANADA, PARALLELS IS AN ELECTRO-POP DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH, CONJURING SOUNDS REMINISCENT OF GIORGIO MORODER, AND EVEN A LITTLE KYLIE MINOGUE. CAM FINDLAY (FORMER LIVE DRUMMER OF CRYSTAL CASTLES) AND SINGER / SONGWRITER HOLLY DODSON MET IN 2004, BONDING OVER AN APPRECIATION FOR DAVID BOWIE. CUT TO A FEW YEARS LATER, AND THEIR FIRST FULL LENGTH ALBUM ‘VISIONARIES’. HOLLY CHATS WITH DIRTY ABOUT THEIR SOUND, ABILITY TO PREDICT THE FUTURE AND DANCE FLOOR MEMORIES.

DIRTY: WHEN DID THE BAND FORM? WHAT DREW YOU TO ONE ANOTHER?

HOLLY DODSON: Parallels was originally Cam’s solo project that he worked on in his spare time from drumming with Crystal castles. He had one track that he wanted to hear vocals on so he emailed it to me and I wrote a little melody and sent it back. So that song turned into Ultralight, which was our first track, and first single off our album. We have both been heavily involved in music, and used to play music together during high school so that’s what drew our friendship together.

D: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?

HD: If I must – Synth pop

D: TELL US WHAT YOUR FIRST ALBUM ‘VISIONARIES’ IS ABOUT.

HD: The album itself doesn’t really have a theme I think because it was our first and we had to see how it progressed on it’s own. Like I mentioned previously, Ultralight was technically a trial song – but we loved what we were writing and felt very satisfied and strongly about the songs so we just kept writing.

D: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG(S) TO PERFORM LIVE?

HD: It always changes, but right now “City of Stars” is my favorite.

D: WHAT PRODUCERS INSPIRE YOU?

HD: I love Bjorn Yttling and Lasse Marten’s work on Lykke Li’s first album – I love all of the reverbs and the big sound that that album has. Also the old guys – like Felton Jarvis who produced Elvis’ later work, and Jack Douglas who produced a few of John Lennon’s solo albums.

D: FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME?

HD: I have so many but Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Hounds of Love by Kate Bush are my go-to albums when I’m in need of quick inspiration.

D: ANYONE IN THE BAND DO ANY OTHER CREATIVE WORK ASIDE FROM MUSIC?

HD: No … except predicting the future and thinking up stories about life and love, all we do involves music.

D: ANY OF YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE COME TRUE?

HD: We’ll have to wait and see..

D: FAVORITE PLACE TO PERFORM?

HD: For people who love music, dancing and singing along even if they don’t know the words.

D: YOUR SHOW AT THE RALEIGH ON HALLOWEEN WAS AWESOME. DID YOU GUYS ENJOY THE HALLOWEEN PARTY? HAD YOU EVER BEEN TO MIAMI BEFORE?

HD: Thanks! Cam had been to Miami but that was my first time. We had an amazing time at the party and met many inspiring new friends. As a matter of fact, we are went back to play at the Vagabond on December 17th and it was so much fun! A really energetic crowd and a good vibe.

D: MOST EMBARRASSING GUILTY PLEASURE?

HD: Drinking gin straight – probably like every other grandparent out there except I’m 23.

D: DO YOU GUYS LIKE TO DANCE? FIRST DANCE FLOOR MEMORY?

HD: Yes-Dancing barefoot in the moonlight… My first dance floor memory would be from when I saw the Cure live like 9 years ago, and I was always so shy to dance but at that show I couldn’t help but break free.

D: TELL US SOMETHING DIRTY.

HD: 007 – vodka, gin, vermouth and fill up the rest with olive juice and 7 olives. THAT’S dirty.
