COCO & BREEZY: GIVING GOOD SHADE

DIRTY HAS A THING FOR TWINS! THIS TIME, WE RENDEZVOUS WITH TWO TWENTY-YEAR-OLD, SELF-TAUGHT AMERICAN ACCESSORY DESIGNERS FROM MINNESOTA, BETTER KNOWN AS COCO AND BREEZY. ROCKING SIX INCH PLATFORMS AND NEON ACCENTS, THE CONFIDENT DUO TURNED HEADS AS THEY GAVE US A SNEAK PEEK AT THEIR UPCOMING SUNGLASSES COLLECTION RAINY DAYS.
LIKE SEASONED CELEBRITIES, COCO AND BREEZY EFFORTLESSLY WORK THE CAMERA FOR THEIR CLOSEUP IN FRONT OF THE MUSÉE GALLIERA (MUSEUM OF FASHION). IT’S NO SURPRISE THE THE SISTERS HAVE TAKEN NYC BY STORM SINCE THEIR ARRIVAL TO THE FASHION CAPITAL ONLY A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO (IT SEEMS THE CITY STREETS ATTRACT ATTENTION FOR THE GIRLS, AS THEY QUICKLY BECOME THE MUSE FOR MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS AND DESIGNERS AROUND THE WORLD.) THEIR SHADES HAVE SHIELDED THE FACES OF MANY CELEBRITIES—FROM THE LIKES OF POP ICONS LIKE BEYONCÉ, KELLY OSBOURNE, NICKI MINAJ AND CIARA,TO TENNIS PRODIGY SERENA WILLIAMS. THEY’VE BEEN FEATURED IN VOGUE, ELLE, VIBE, FADER, W, PAPER, and THE NEW YORK TIMES.

DIRTY: SO, LET’S START OFF WITH THE USUAL QUESTIONS: WHERE ARE YOU LADIES FROM?

BREEZY: We’re originally from Minnesota — the suburbs in Minnesota. It’s a non-fashion state, and we’re definitely outsiders from where we’re from. Everybody wears jeans and t-shirts, and that’s actually what made us create sunglasses. People used to stare at us, laugh at us… No one understood our style, and when we created our eyewear collection, it was only for ourselves. We created it so we could block ourselves away from the world.

D: IS IT SUNNY IN MINNESOTA?

B: It’s mostly snow.

C: Yeah, lots of snow and it’s very cold.

B: But we didn’t use [our eyewear] for the sun, we used them for more like… a shade.

C: But it was a shade to block people who stared at us.

B: We had no idea why people were staring.

D: MAYBE PEOPLE WERE STARING BECAUSE YOU ARE PRETTY TWIN SISTERS?

C&B: Aw, thank you!

B: We started designing only for ourselves. Then when we turned nineteen, it was crazy, we were like, “Let’s go to New York just for fun!”

D: HOW OLD ARE YOU NOW?

C&B: We’re twenty.

D: WHAT’S YOUR SIGN?

C&B: Leo.

C: Which means we work very hard. Our birthday’s next month… We’ll be twenty-one. We’re getting old, oh my god.

D: WHERE DID ALL THIS CREATIVITY COME FROM AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE?

C: We were always artsy. I remember being younger and making clothes for our pet. Also, using our mom’s bedsheets and sewing them into dresses.

B: We preferred staying home and creating. Like sketching dresses. Whenever friends came over, we asked, “Oh, can I pick out your outfit?” or “Oh, can I make you clothes?” instead of going to the park and playing tag.

D: WHAT INSPIRES THE NAMES OF YOUR COLLECTIONS?

C: Every collection has a name and it goes with our story line. So our first collection was Gemela Amor. It means ‘twin love’ in Spanish. Our second collection was called 20/20, which means we live in the year two thousand and twenty. Then came our next collection, Wearable Art, that debuted last February during Fashion Week.

D: THAT MUST’VE BEEN, I WOULD ASSUME, A BIG DEAL FOR YOU GUYS. HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE THAT MOMENT?

B: It was actually really exciting, just because we branched off into accessories, and the way we put the presentation together was so amazing. Prior to that show, we were in Paris for a whole month and got a lot of inspiration.

D: FROM PARIS?

B: Yeah. So the show was actually in French. It was called Invasion de l’artiste, I’m probably saying it wrong.

C: Invasion de l’artiste?

B: Yeah.

D: AND THE TRANSLATION IS?

C: ‘Invasion of the Artist’. We don’t create accessories. We create wearable art.

D: SO YOUR PIECES ARE ALL ONE-OF-A-KIND.

B: Yeah. We have set styles: they’re handcrafted and all unique.

D: IS SEEMS LIKE YOU’RE CREATING QUITE A FOLLOWING AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE. ARE YOU SURPRISED?

C: Well, I would say that we are pretty surprised. I mean, it’s always been our goal to inspire others. But, I would say that our goal is to show people that you can make a new product and not be afraid to push it out. We just wanted to show young kids, even adults, to be confident in your art and in your work, just push it. And so our following gained so fast— it’s crazy!

B: One thing that’s crazy is that we’re in Paris and we’re getting stopped on the streets. Like, New York—cool, I live there. But being in another country, kids chasing us down the street, they make me feel like I’m the shit, they make me feel like—

C&B: “Wow!”

B: Like I’m actually touching around the world.

C: Yeah, and we don’t let it get to our heads, ever. If anything, it makes us need to keep working harder. Once you know people are following you, maybe you’re doing something right.

D: DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL FOR FASHION?

B: No we didn’t.

C: Straight out of high school.

D: SO YOU’RE SELF-TAUGHT?

C&B: Yes we are.

D: SO IF PEOPLE WANTED TO PURCHASE SUNGLASSES FROM YOU, WHERE CAN THEY BE FOUND?

B: They can be found in Japan, Italy, Germany, Bermuda, New York, California, Philadelphia, and on our website, cocoandbreezy.com. We have a store list on the Locations page, where you could find if our line is in your area.

D: WHAT CELEBRITIES HAVE BEEN SEEN WEARING YOUR SUNGLASSES?

B: Beyoncé, Kelly Osbourne, Nicki Minaj, Ciara, Serena Williams. Just to name a few. It really makes us feel good that the people on posters in our room are obsessed with our product now.

D: SO IS THERE CURRENTLY ONE PERSON IN PARTICULAR WEARING YOUR SUNGLASSES THAT YOU’RE REALLY…

B: Beyoncé was the first to wear our Wearable Art collection and she was actually our dream goal.

D: SO HOW WOULD YOU GET A PAIR OF GLASSES TO BEYONCÉ?

C: Well, her stylist contacted us.

D: HOW ABOUT GAGA?

C: Not yet, I want to wait ‘til my new stuff comes out.

B: We love Lady Gaga and Rihanna, and those are people that we want to wear our collection, but—

C&B: Beyoncé was our number one goal.

C: Beyoncé’s classic.

B: And she doesn’t wear every designer.

D: SO, IN TODAY’S PHOTO SHOOT, YOU WERE DEBUTING A NEW PAIR OF SUNGLASSES.

C: Yes. Our new new collection, called Rainy Days.

B: It’s a part of our Summer 2012. It should be ready for Fashion Week in September.

D: LASTLY, TELL US A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET!

C: My Dirty secret… hm! I’m a nerd and I love to watch National Geographic and crazy documentaries. Also, people always call me the “uptight mean twin”! Don’t worry, I am nice!

B: My Dirty secret? Even though I may look wild and crazy, deep down inside I am very shy!
